Some stuff from the 'weirder' end of the funk 'scene' here....

Little Beaver / Do Right Man / Saadia (Quite simply, one of my favourite records of all time, "pure black soul, for the educated crowd", a masterpiece from the allmighty Saadia stable.

Ronny Pellers / Coming Home Babe / Satin Sound (Had this on an ACME comp for years, dug it out a few nights ago to listen to a totally different track & forgot how totally amazing this was, a quick search on the net threw up very little, then I was scouring GEMM, typed in 'Ronny Pellers' & up pops this little beauty, at what I thought at the time was a reasonable price, i've since learned that nobody was aware this ever came out on 45 & the LP it comes from commands a £300 price tag. This 45 is out of Switzerland & is, I guess what you would term 'Lounge Funk', but this has a much harder edge than anything else in that genre, head nodding hip hop style drum & bass pattern, give way to quirky horns, blue eyed vox & deep hammond, a truely great 45.

Big Tom / No Thank You Mr Pusher / Here & Now (I purchased a copy of this 45 about 4 or 5 years ago in a small record shop in the UK, played it only a handful of times then sold it on, thinking it would be real easy to pick up another copy, well 5 years later & i've finally found it again, blue eyed psych funk, with a backbeat of dirty drum & bass, an expansive production & gritty male vox, pretty sure any copies of this that turn up will be in the UK, as everyone i've spoken to in the US has never heard of it, not to everyone's taste, but I love this.

Estelle Levitt / All I Dream / Music Factory (First heard on a compilation CD given to me by one of the UKs finest diggers of obscure folk/psych funk 45s 'Mr Chris McBride'(fat city records). I searched for 2 years for this, then finally got a copy through GEMM (again) for $9 (result), I barely slept until it landed on my doormat, Psychedelic folk funk, with sweeping Spectoresque strings & a slight C&W feel, absolutely stunning.

The Little Beaver is one of the best/oldest spins at the Chicago soul night. Whats the damage on that? its not as rare as the Sam Baker version supposedly...

I paid around $400 for mine, not sure if it's worth that, but my guess is it would sell for more now, due to evertbody who hears it wants a copy, a truely amazing record.
